Respecting Choices

“Joyce Hart Smerick became an independent contractor for Respecting Choices in 2015, serving as a First Steps Faculty Consultant.

In 2012, Smerick joined the Wisconsin Medical Society as program coordinator for the new Honoring Choices Wisconsin initiative. As ACP Faculty, she educated and supported over 30 healthcare organizations across the state as they developed and expanded their advance care planning programs. She then became director of Honoring Choices Wisconsin.

Prior to her experience with Honoring Choices Wisconsin, Smerick worked in the field of continuing medical education at the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health and UnityPoint Health-Meriter in Madison, Wisconsin, and the University of Minnesota Medical School in Minneapolis, Minnesota.

With more than 20 years of experience as a childbirth educator, she is thankful to be working in an area that promotes person-centered care.

“I feel privileged to be working with passionate, dedicated, creative people across the country who are committed to person-centered care.”
